XS Scuba Safety Sausage (SMB) Video Review
Choosing A Life Jacket For Your Pet
Dogs are great aren't they? They can carry a newspaper in their mouth, fetch a ball for hours on end and sniff a sausage out at fifty paces! But it's a myth that all dogs can swim.
Even dogs who are able to swim cannot maintain a doggy paddle for too long, especially older dogs or those who enjoy their treats! Plus, weather conditions and other hazards could pose a threat for your pet!
And let's face it, falling into the waves can be pretty scary for any of us. You feel panicked, short of breath and disorientated.
With sailing vacations becoming increasingly popular, it's likely that you'll take your dog with you rather than sending him to the kennels. And even on the shortest trip, your canine friend could quite possibly get over excited and take a tumble.
So while we're sure that you keep an eye on your pup at all times, a life jacket is the safest way to keep your pet out of trouble on the waves.
A pet life jacket will keep your pet afloat in a horizontal, swimming position and should also include a retrieval device, should you experience a dog overboard situation.
Here are our top tips for choosing a life jacket for your pet:
Make sure your dog's life jacket fits securely. If you're purchasing from a shop, check it fits before you buy
If you're buying online, you'll need to know your dog's weight, length from neck to tail and the measurement around their rib cage
For smaller dogs, choose a life jacket with lifting handles to make retrieval from the water easier
Ensure the life jacket is comfortable. You'll find your dog is far more accepting of wearing a life jacket if it fits like a glove. Give them a chance to get used to wearing their life jacket before going aboard
A bright colour will not only make your dog look cool, but it will make them easier to spot in the water
Talk to other boating pet owners for advice, they are sure to have recommendations for makes and models
If money is no object, there is a wide range of designer dog life jackets available in a in an amazing array of styles and colours - fishermen might prefer a camouflage design
Or what about automatic life jackets which inflate automatically if your dog falls into the water? The down side to this is that the jacket could inflate if it comes into contact with even a small amount of water, plus it contains a gas activation unit which can only be used once
Remember! Never leave your pet unattended while wearing a life jacket. They could chew through the life jacket, become entangled or overheat in direct sun
So, what we're saying is - if a life jacket is good enough for you, then its good enough for man's best friend! Buy yourself some peace of mind knowing that your dog will float if he gets himself into hot water! You'll be glad you did.
